LEVEL 1 & LEVEL 2 MOUNTAIN BIKE LEADERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS

Combined Training & Assessment

These are 2 Day Mountain Bike Leader / Instructor Courses

2 Day Course – Day 1 (Theory) Day 2 (Practical)

Start at 10, finish at 5:30 (approx)

Cost of course including Registration, Logbook, and ABC Certificate - £209

These mountain bike leader / instructor qualifications were first introduced into the education sector. However, they are now widely used and recognised by independent mountain bike guides, mountain bike holiday companies, teachers, military personel, police service, youth leaders, scout leaders etc. It is the only mountain biking award to have benefited from a recognised qualification, from the NVQ Awarding Body (A.B.C.)

The Level 1 mountain bike leader / instructor qualification is aimed at those who wish to lead groups of beginners in non-technical terrain (forest tracks, canal towpaths etc).

The Level 2 mountain bike leader / instructor qualification is aimed at those who wish to lead groups of beginners in non technical terrain and intermediate riders in technical (rocky / demanding terrain).

Successful completion of the above, will give the candidate access to low cost professional indemnity insurance (appox £50 per annum)

Ray Mazey & Mike Stafford have a wealth of experience / knowledge in coaching and group managing beginners through to advanced riders. We fully appreciate all the issues that arise from this, and therefore group management / coaching plays a large part of your Leadership Training / Assessment.

Please remember. Being a first class mountain biker, maybe of little value to a total novice. We never underestimate the positive impact on a rider, that competant coaching / group management skills can bring.

The Level 1 & Level 2 courses are run together. The candidates & Instructor will decide after the training period which assessment the candidate will undergo; Level 1 or Level 2

The course has national accreditation with: The Association of British Cycle Coaches, Cyclist's Touring Club (C.T.C.) and the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) and the NVQ Awarding Body (A.B.C.).

Course syllabus -

The syllabus shown above is assessed to meet MIAS requirements by the following methods-

Candidates who wish to be assessed at Level 1 must be able to demonstrate basic off-road riding skills.

Candidates who wish to be assessed at Level 2 must be able to demonstrate strong off road riding skills including step drops (up to 1/2 metre), descending / braking in a controlled manner, effective climbing and pedalling techniques in rough / rocky terrain. It is unlikely that these skills would have be gained if the candidate has been riding for less than 12 months in off road (rough) terrain. If candidates do not possess these off road skills, they should first attend our Beginners and Intermediate courses.

Although other relevant leadership skills / qualifications are an advantage they are not essential.

Total cost of Level 1 & 2 Training / assessment = £209 (including ABC Certificate).

Level 1 & 2 Training / assessment courses are 2 days in duration. 10.00am till 5.00pm (approx.)

At the end of the Training / Assessment, successful instructors will have their logbooks signed by the course tutor. *This will then enable them to lead groups below 600 metres. A formal certificate from the ABC ( NVQ Awarding Body ) will follow by post.

**The candidate must also hold a valid First Aid certificate prior to leading groups.

For those candidates who wish to lead groups above 600 Metres there is a Level 3 qualification available. However, the candidate must first complete the Level 2 Training / Assessment and must also hold a minimum of a Walking Group Leaders Award (WGL) prior to Level 3 assessment. Please advise us on your Level 2 Training / Assessment if you wish to be considered for Level 3.

Please check course dates for dates / availability or contact us

On receipt of booking / medical forms and payment, course notes / directions etc. will be posted to you prior to attending the Training / Assessment.
